Hounds In The Night, Bring Me Home
SUMMARY "Try and patch up something of what used to be us. I missed you— Miss you, right now. Something was gone from my life and I didn't know how to handle it. Yes, that's immature. Yes, I probably should've gotten over it. But I didn't want to. I—I didn't want it to be over, forever, just like that."
"You can want all you like. That doesn't change that there's two of us here." Shauna glares. "Don't I have a say in this?"
"Of course you do,"" and Jackie's eyes look up at her from behind her lashes; pleading to go easy on her.
Shauna considers it; takes in the sagging shoulders and circles under her eyes. Jackie does look worse than she ever did before. College evidently didn't result in a reinvention of herself, or at least not in the way she mused on in high school.

In the wake of their time in the wilderness and presumed dead to the world, Shauna and Jackie both need to adjust to life without each other, and with bodies that no longer completely feel like their own. Fall of 1999, Providence, is the setting for an unexpected reunion.

SUMMARY Her hands rest with fingers splayed on his back, feeling every muscle, knowing exactly where to put pressure to pop each joint and muscle free as clean as possible. "I hope you like this as much as I do," she hears next in a husky voice, but softer, lighter. Crackling only faintly at the end of words. "Is it everything you thought it would be?" Shauna can feel the smile curling against the goosebumps on her neck. She yelps at the daring nip on her flesh that follows, and twists her fingers into a honey mob of soft hair to keep everything in place; to still have something to control here.

Let's Imagine That No One Is Lost
SUMMARY "Gross..." Shauna pulls a face, but at this point the smell is worse than the sight of it. She's encountered a lot in the past weeks, so this is more common than she'd like to admit. A telling dark web of veins spreads out from a missing chunk at the shoulder. Nasty place to get bit, sure, but it probably didn't leave much time to think about it.

('Below the elbows and knees is good to amputate,' Misty had told her in the first days, when they were happened to be holed up in the same flower shop across town. Jackie had made a sound in disgust. 'Anything closer to the torso is a waste of energy and effort. You'd do better to leave someone behind at that point.')

Shauna hadn't asked exactly how Misty had known that, and didn't feel like it was a reason to convince her to come along in the car. Misty, in her own way, was pretty self-sufficient.

In a surprising turn of events, it's not a plane crash but the end of the world that has Shauna test her survival skills. Besides her own life, there's Jackie to keep an eye on, and while some things change, others remain the same.

An afternoon in the apocalypse, 1996.

SUMMARY Jackie squints at her. "None of your business.” Her nose twitches. Catch.

"Is it? Did Sadecki say something mean again? Is he not coming to the Easter brunch to flatter your mom?"

Tai relishes in how that gets Jackie gaping at her.

"What the fuck," she starts, pointing first from her spot on the floor and then scrambling to her feet while clinging to the sink to keep herself from slipping on the tile, "gives you the right to say that!"

They're level again now. Taissa likes that much better. An equal opponent is more fun to take down. She leans back against the door as she takes a swig of beer.

"Isn't it the truth? You said too much, he didn't want to hear it. It's how that always goes, right? At least if I have to believe Shauna."" She smirks at Jackie's quickly reddening face.

"Don't you bring her into this." Jackie stomps one foot for emphasis. "You're just a jealous loser, Taissa Turner!"

SUMMARY Jackie exhales with what she fears is the lead-in to another series of arguments, but instead, she nods. "Okay…" And doesn't attempt to move out of Shauna's embrace.

"You're not going to die. Not for a long time, I bet."

"Wow, you're so optimistic."

"I mean it. Wanna bet?"

"... Sure. But if I'm dead in the morning, I'll so haunt you."

"Permission granted."

So Shauna waits while her arm grows a little sore under the weight before she moves it. They don't say much after, not even in sleep. It may be hours before she turns off the lamp again, once Jackie's breaths have evened out against her neck.

SUMMARY It's nothing. That's what Jeff tells her on the car ride back home. It's what she says to herself in the bathroom mirror, careful not to look too closely at anything that might be moving in the background. It earned Lottie a one-way trip to Switzerland, after all.

"It's nothing," even her mom says to her over a cup of tea. Callie sits gleefully on her knee, just barely able to reach the teaspoon on the table with her tiny hands. "Marilyn was having a hard time with it, though she'd never tell you the full truth of it. I know how I was, when my own birthday came around and I was waiting for the breakfast in bed, still. Your dad even called to check in." She tucks Callie's soft hairs out of her face while Shauna takes a quiet sip.

"It was hard for her, for me, for everyone. The whole town felt it, so it was really a matter of time before the kids would make up stories. Some of it was about what would be going on out there, or a secret rescue and how every transfer student could really be one of you in disguise. Ghost stories were a natural step further."

SUMMARY "If it gets too heavy, if they don't find shelter, they could die out there."

It's too loud in the dark room. The silence that meets Shauna has her longing for a night light to make sure that she's not in some endless abyss. There's the bright crack on the windowpane that forms the only thing to hold on to, since Jackie doesn't offer her any comfort with softly-spoken words or a hand to hold. Maybe that was to be expected. The insinuation was there. Briefly, Shauna's thoughts entertain themselves by trying to remember if there is such a thing as murder through negligence, and if she could live with that knowledge. When she dwells upon uncomfortable ideas of her future, she resigns herself to sleep.

And dreams of summer.

The story of winter, from the first snow to the first bloom, in which some things change and some stay the same.

But Nat bumps someone next to her and points in Shauna's direction, and soon after Shauna can feel the blood stop in her veins.

SUMMARY She no longer looks frozen, but her skin is still so unnervingly pale. When Jackie lifts her head to look back at Shauna, her eyes flicker for a second when the light catches onto them.
